As the state capital and home to The University of Texas, Austin has a population of over 500,000 and over 1,000,000 in the metropolitan area. The Texas State Capitol, actually 14 feet taller than the nation's capitol, is the largest domed statehouse in the country.
Austin was recently ranked the most entrepreneurial city in the country and has a thriving economy with an innovative professional community of artists, physicians, technologists, and visionaries. Home to over twenty museums and dozens of art galleries, it is one of the only U.S. cities with professional ballet, symphony, opera, and theater companies.
Austin also has been called The Live Music Capital of the World, having more than 100 live venues on any given evening. With a temperate year-round climate and 300 days of sunshine a year, the city has nature trails, parks, wilderness preserves, spring-fed swimming pools, and lakes enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Not to mention, Austin has plenty of great restaurants, with cuisines ranging from Interior Mexican and Tex-Mex to BBQ and Southwestern to Asian and Vegetarian.

Maya Meetings 2008 on Google Maps
![]()
For those of you who are Google Earth users, clicking on the place mark below will take you to the 2008 Maya Meeting on-campus location where there are placed a couple of overlays onto the top of the Art Building where we will be meeting (the VAC building footprint and the 2008 logo).
Zooming out of the picture slightly allows you to see symbols of a vertical knife and fork -- these stand for restaurants. If you click on them, you will see restaurant names, phone numbers and addresses and sometimes their WebPages. Most of those symbolized are off campus. Also, if you zoom out more you should see things that look like small beds. These are nearby hotels. .
